Introducing Floogle

There isn’t a mother in America that isn’t concerned about her child catching the flu (Especially this mother).  With that in mind, the geek geniuses at Google have unveiled a new trend-tracker to provide real-time updates of potential flu outbreaks.  Considering influenza kills thousands and hospitalizes hundreds of thousands of Americans annually, giving people the ability to locate potential flu hotspots as they occur may facilitate more effective preventitive measures.

Over a several year period, Google tracked web inquiries relating to flu topics and compared that data against actual cases reported to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) by doctors.  What they found was a strong relationship between how many flu related searches were performed and the actual cases of the flu. And unlike CDC methods which have days of lag between outbreak occurance and reporting, Floogle provides a virtual real-time update of the flu map.

As a sidebar, I will do a future post using google trends to map douchebag hotspots.  My guess is New Jersey will be intense 🙂
