Energy In v. Energy Out

How much energy does it take to extract energy?  For renewables, continual innovations and advancements in technology will continue to push outputs left and make it more bang for the buck.  In contrast, oil (and all finite resources in general) is high-graded, or the easiest  resources are extracted from the earth first, b/c they require less costs and effort to remove.  This phenom, pending some major technological breakthrough in the extraction industry, will continue to push outputs right, or less efficient
